This post will help you learn how quartz is made into your countertop or other home surfaces.
How Is Quartz Formed
Most quartz forms in either igneous rocks or spaces with geothermal waters.
In igneous rocks, quartz forms as magma cools. Like water turning into ice, silicon dioxide will crystallize as it cools.
Then, when the temperature or pressure drops, the solution becomes saturated, so quartz crystals form.
Quartz minerals are mined and then they are ground into an aggregate that is later fused with resin that binds the rock under intense pressure e heat to form a quartz slab.
During the process of imparting color to the countertop, pigments are added to give it a unique and beautiful aesthetic.
Types of Quartz
Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth’s crust.
It comes in many different varieties.
Amethyst, citrine, and agate are just a few popular gem forms of quartz.
Quartz that grows from silica-rich water forms in a similar way.
Silicon dioxide dissolves in water, like sugar in tea, but only at high temperature and pressure.
Then, when the temperature or pressure drops, the solution becomes saturated, so quartz crystals form.
Different brands, such as Caesarstone, Silestone, Cambria and others are likely to have slight differences in the exact percentage of quartz content, although the numbers will always be close to 90%.
There are many different varieties of quartz, several of which are semi-precious gemstones.
Where Quartz is found
Quartz can be found everywhere from Brazil to India and even the United States.
Since antiquity, varieties of quartz have been the most used minerals in the making of jewelry and hardstone carvings, especially in Eurasia.
Durability of Quartz Countertops
Quartz is the mineral defining the value of 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness, a qualitative scratch method for determining the hardness of a material to abrasion.
It is from these mineral and other components that Quartz Countertops are made.
Since quartz is one of the most durable minerals, you can bet that your Quartz countertops will have for a long time.
Your countertop can last a lifetime, if you buy from a reliable supplier and take care of its preservation.
